Mera Rubell is the co-founder of the Rubell Family Collection, one of the leading collections of contemporary art in the world. She and her husband, Don, began collecting in 1964, shortly after marrying. At the time, Don was starting medical school and Mera was working as a teacher in the first Head Start program in New York City. Their income was $100 a week, and they spent $25 of it on art. This passion for art has continued to guide the Rubells over the past 50 years. In 1994 Mera, Don and their children founded the Contemporary Arts Foundation (CAF) a non-profit foundation in the Wynwood District of downtown Miami, FL. Open to the public since 1996, the Rubell Family Collection and CAF are housed in a converted former Drug Enforcement Agency confiscated-goods warehouse. The museum presents the Rubell’s collection through rotating, curated exhibitions and a variety of educational and community outreach programs. Their most recent exhibition is entitled 28 Chinese and features work by contemporary Chinese artists.
